Though Elementary Mathematics teachers have received some Professional Development on how to teach more complex word problem types introduced by the Common Core State Standards, this is still a new area for most teachers. More importantly, teachers do not have a bank of sample word problems to choose from in order to practice each type of problem. Though they may have resources for one day of instruction, they then have to create any practice materials they need for students to continue to practice the strategies taught.
To remedy this problem, Lena Pacheco, CREC teacher, used Microsoft Excel to create a worksheet generator aligned with the new problem types. Teachers could refresh the worksheet to change the nouns and numbers in the problems so that they could be used over and over again. Though this tool was effective, it was extremely limited. The Studio 111 team was able to work together with Lena to create PBandMath. This tool saves teachers time, and being aligned to the Common Core standards makes it more likely that teachers will effectively teach and practice each of the problem types in isolation, and then review them in combinations.
PBandMath is a Common Core State Standard aligned Math word problem generator. Teachers can generate hundreds of word problems. Question Banks can be built in minutes, and teachers can plan ahead and save their Question Banks. Word problems can be printed in PDF or Microsoft Word format for small group or individual practice. PBandMath also features a display mode for use on an interactive white board or projector for whole class instruction.
