In addition to other sets of standards that teachers have to understand and implement, science teachers have to also work with the Next Generation Science Standards. This adds another layer of complexity to developing curriculum.
While some software had existed to help plan curriculum, it fell short in a number of key areas, and was not intuitive to use. Jaime Rechenberg, a CREC science education specialist, created new methods for helping curriculum writers navigate the new standards and develop NGSS aligned curriculum. Studio 111 was able to come in and work with Jaime and develop a technological companion to her solution, Catalyst Planner.
Catalyst Planner is a web platform to create 3-dimensional STEM instructional units driven by real-world phenomena. The app allows users to reference the Next Generation Science Standards and linked Common Core Standards while planning, quickly and easily drag-and-drop NGSS elements into learning sequences, and share and manage created curriculum with colleagues.
